When arriving in Firenze, I had so much to absorb – from the new culture/practiced traditions, to mouthwatering smells surrounding me, a beautiful language being spoken and breathtaking architecture occupying every corner.
One factor I have to get used to is how the Italians go about their typical day…well, their food agenda, that is. When waking up, Italians eat a light breakfast…usually a moist croissant, hot espresso and fruit. I am, and forever will be, a dedicated food connoisseur – I always enjoy eating a big breakfast: short stack of pancakes with juicy bacon and fresh fruit, or an omelette with a side of toast are my ‘go-tos.’ Breakfast time in Italy is minimal, consisting of small – but irrevocably delectable – portions. Lunch in Italy is the biggest meal of the day. I have savored dishes of doughy pasta and Pomodoro sauce for lunch, complemented with a glass of vino. Speaking of the important and highly valued ‘vino,’ the Italians drink it with every meal. It was intriguing to discover when eating out that you are charged for a glass of water, but usually not the house wine! I am sure you agree, they have their priorities in excellent order.
Dinner in Italia is eaten later in the evening around 9:00pm. Bread is served with dinner. A friendly waiter told us that the bread should be saved for after the meal (to dunk into your pasta sauce), instead of eating it before the meal and spoiling your appetite. Snacks are sold in bars, which comprise of a variety of small sandwiches – from ham and mozzarella to tomato and pesto…no Balance or Luna energy bar nonsense! Now experiencing my sixth day in the Italian food lifestyle, I am proud to say that I am definitely getting into the swing of things!
For lunch this afternoon, I prepared a mouthwatering sandwich. For any students staying in an Italian apartment, going food shopping is a must. I was craving a quick meal before my afternoon class and had picked up fresh cold cuts the day before – prosciutto and cheese, along with a fresh loaf of bread and arugula. I recommend visiting a farmer’s market or the closest grocery store. I had some fresh fruit with my sandwich and was all set for my class!
